Oceans - Nothing Collapses - CD (2009)

Labels: Copper Lung
Review by: Gareth L

Post rock is a funny old game and this is a band which describes itself as not simply post rock but ‘Posi post rock with bro gang vocals’ and although that is hopefully tongue-in-cheek it’s actually a pretty apt description. These guys are kind of a bit like The Appleseed Cast or Explosions in the Sky but a bit more metallic, a bit crunchier. I use that word fairly regularly when describing what bands sound like and I hope you know what I’m getting at. I think it’s the beefy thud of the bassdrum that does it. They are still very pretty, twinkly and magical in places but the sound of much of the record just feels…kinda heavy.

Oceans (could there be a more post rock name for a band?) actually have their roots in DIY punk rock it seems which could account for the posi gang vocals (which are actually only in 2 songs it seems). This is their punk rock, some might say. Definitely a band to get lost in, they build up their lengthy songs and bring them down again very well, a couple are a little on the dreary side but mostly this is an enjoyable hour and actually seems to be great to listen to when driving which I’ve never really found with this kind of music before.
