This was the first release that I pulled out of the reviews jiffy bag. I swear, the cover of this release stank of BSM. The colour, the font, the band name all reeked of it. As ever, I was correct and it is indeed to be released very soon on vinyl by BSM. The press release tells me that I should be raving about this band because they have been pubic for 4 or 5 years and can play instruments adeptly. They also feature “not one, but two violins’. I can’t think of any other band that has accomplished such a feat … *sigh* … It also states that they have played with loads of excellent bands and because of this I should give a shit. That aspect kinda reminded me of that Meet Me in St. Louis release from a while back in which there was a similar list. On to the music though. It’s what you’d expect really for a band claiming to marry “thundering post-rock’ with math. There’s twinkles, plenty of over-reliance on delay pedals and, well, the violins don’t really work for some reason. It’s well orchestrated I suppose and these chaps can clearly play their instruments, but ultimately it’s EXACTLY what I was expecting. My girlfriend walked in half-way through one track and said it sounded like the sort of thing she’d expect to hear in a day-time soap during a “sad’ bit. Whilst I don’t entirely agree with her comment, I found it amusing enough to include in this review. This isn’t really anything to get hyped about kids. It sounds like 65daysofstatic’s younger brother trying to be #1 and failing spectacularly.
Oh, also, the press release says that this is ‘the soundtrack to the apocalypse’. I hope to God this isn’t true, because if this is playing when four horsemen appear in the sky I’m going to flip my fucking lid.
