Part Chimp - Thriller - CD (2009)

Labels: Rock Action
Review by: Alex Deller

Have to admit, I’ve given this lot pretty short shrift over the years since they seem to be perennially getting in the way at gigs, cluttering up the night with their heavy, grungy sounds without ever really making much of an impression. In keeping with this assessment I’ve not much bothered with their recorded output either, hearing the odd snippet here or there but never feeling the urge to go beyond a cursory half-listen. In contrast to all these dreary prejudices and preconceptions, “Thriller” is actually pretty darn good, a heavy ol’ thing that merges Taddish WHUMP with snaking Kyuss-esque melodies and a heavy-lidded mix of feedback squall and burnt-out repetition that owes a fuggy, resin-coated debt to the Heads. It’s simple, lunk-headed and far too hairy to be anything like pretentious, but if such things don’t concern you or, moreover, get you positively frothing at the mouth, this is one sizeable dollop of stoner-grunge-psych-whatever-rawk that you should be itching to set your paws upon.
