This demo tape is an absolute rager. MRKAXN tear through three tracks of grizzly, pissed-off hardcore that isn’t a million miles off the first half of Civil Terror’s ‘Surrounded By Assholes” LP (except a bit chuggier!), and one track of downtuned, sludging hardcore that reminds me of Iron Lung’s ‘Cancer’ (Sexless//No Sex) or some of the slower, heavier California Love passages. It would be nice to hear them tighten everything up – specifically on the first track, where they lose momentum at least once. Also, the production is a little too neat and tidy for them to pull the sound off completely. With a little more distortion and push, this could be really great. Maybe sometime in the future mrkaxn will slot in nicely among the hip, scuzzy hardcore bands on the Youth Attack roster.
I’ll definitely be keeping an eye open for anything these guys do in the future. Get it.
