Dan Webb and the Spiders - s/t - CD (2009)

Review by: Andy Malcolm

Not sure what’s up with the production on this, it’s very loud and the distortion is not doing what sounds like pretty competent Husker Du style poppy songs any favours at all. I suppose they might be going for a Dinosaur Jr vibe, but that boat is missed too. Opener “The Fall Of ’08” sets the scene here, it is a short burst of a track, rocking out effectively, but it drowns under this lumpy fuzzy drone that was simply not needed. Still, at 1 minute 26 seconds it doesn’t outstay it’s welcome and you can’t knock the refrain of “All my friends are losing their shit”. Dan Webb and his 8 legged chums buzz through the 9 songs on here in double quick time, only two of them break the three minute mark, and it all turns out to be a pretty neat album. As far as I can tell, you are forced to play this album at a high volume (good / bad thing?), because when I listened last time on a low volume through the speakers, it sounded shocking, but now on headphones with it cranked, I can hear where they are coming from a bit more. So this is far from awful, I just feel that there were some really good songs here, but the heavy handed production has reduced their potential. Regardless, I did enjoy listening, and there is some pretty catchy shit on here.
