Japanese Beaver are Canadian - Beards and Bass - CD (2009)

Labels: self released
Review by: Danny Parsons

They have two bassists and no guitar! Contender for worst band name ever? What I originally thought might be a gimmick of sorts actually works really quite well. There’s six songs of quite gruff, jazzy emo (or mild screamo depending on how you look at it) on this EP and it’s surprisingly listenable. It’s not a particularly fast-paced EP after the first song “” in fact I’d probably go so far as to say that it trudges at times. It trudges very pleasantly though as there’s plenty of catchy melodies on offer and when it does pick up the pace slightly it’s entirely welcome. JBAC have a clean bass and a distorted bass and on this EP I feel that the clean bass should be given a bit more prominence as it kinda gets lost under the fuzz occasionally. That’s pretty much my only gripe though bar the fact the songs names are RIDICULOUS. The vocals are for the most part screamed/shouted and remind me a bit of Antilles (whom I like) so it’s all good. JBAC are definitely not a gimmick and definitely worth a listen. JBAC are from Canada in case that’s not clear.
