I’m a sucker for post punk music that relies on melody as much as it does on smarts, and Tyler Jon Tyler really nail that combination on this excellent seven. “New England Street” confuses initially, all stripped down and simplistic and seeming that it’ll never explode, before it gently introduces the melody under the kick ass, strong vocals. You can tell they are just waiting to bust out the catchy bit, but maybe they are slightly worried that it’ll make them uncool. I sort of struggle to peg where this A-side is in the whole realm of music I know. It feels familiar, without being a ridiculous carbon copy of anything. Flip it for “Faster Than Light” and I am on more comfortable ground, this is a fantastic, warm, repetitous track. The vocals are slightly off the wall, and I am going to throw out Life Without Buildings and Wilderness as vague comparisons. I love how this song blazes a mid-pace, bludgeoning a lovely bassy sound to carry things along. Fucking great track, I need to hear more by these guys ASAP.
