I was a lot more impressed by this than I expected to be – as it was folk from On the Might of Princes and Latterman and that isn’t likely to produce soemthing that is too much my cup of tea in 2009. But from the moment the needle hits and you get a repeated note chiming away over a warm bass tone I was on edge. Sounds like we’re being set up for some emo. A few moments later and the hoarse vocals are in, over mid paced rumblings, and then the high pitched singing. This is really out of place, it reminds me a lot lot lot of 12 Hour Turn in places. There is some noodly / metal guitar in there at times which I would personally have dropped, as the rumbling grooves are really impressive and the clash of styles in one song doesn’t work so much. Amidst this there are some great melodic parts, particularly when everything slows down and gets a bit lumpy. There is plenty of good stuff over the course of these three songs, but there is just too much going on at times, getting a bit too chaotic. The best track is the long, side filling “Fix Until Broken” which has the most interesting structure of the bunch – kicking out frantically until it breaks down into a softer and slower part that sounds a lot like Julia. Overall I think these guys need to get a bit of focus, listen to more Sleepytime Trio and tighten things up a touch. Until then, this is a really solid 7″ that suggests even better things are coming in the imminent future.
