Silly band name. Reasonable songs. I hear a lot of sounds in this lot, ranging from Bear Vs Shark, to Pearl Jam. Behind the extraordinarily ambitious vocal, lies a reasonably simplistic off-kilter indie-rock backing. Strange chord progressions; clean, twangy guitars; subtle stop start rhythms; all of which march forward behind a shattering vocal. It yells, it warbles, it chants and sings, fluttering between mimics of Guy Picciotto and Eddie Vedder almost. The vocals are the only aspect which kept hold of my attention, as musically, the songs barely progress and go absolutely nowhere. The unique croon leads the way at the forefront of the mix. The melodies ping-pong all over unimaginable spectrums, whilst never becoming unattached from the basis of the band’s direction, but I can’t help but feel a little under whelmed. It’s as accomplished as you’d expect from a low-key release, but over seven tracks, nothing ever progresses from twangy, disjointed rhythms and an unpredictable vocal. There are some occasional plucked guitar segments which are very enjoyable, but as a piece of music, it appears very limited. This won’t be slipped out of it’s sleeve too often, but if a track appears on my shuffled iPod, then I’ll give it the time of day. Vocally impressive, but lacks ideas.
