The thing I like about Myspace is when good bands find you and get you to listen to them. That’s how lazy I am. I tend not to have the drive to use google and myspace on the off chance of hearing something new, if a band is any good, then they’ll tell me about it, surely. Anyway, Polygon was one of those bands that did that, and here I am reviewing their 4 track demo. This is a really solid release, each track rumbles along nicely, with the unobtrusive vocals pitched perfectly in the mix, just how I like this. It sounds a heck of a lot like mid 90s Built to Spill, with a little touch of repetitious Promise Ring thrown in there too. This naturally means that it also sounds quite a bit like Superchunk. Or if you want a more recent reference, then Annabel will do. My favourite track is “Coming Around” which has some delightful, bouncing midwestmo guitar and driving bass. The airy finale of “Familiar Faces” is pretty special also.
Polygon are tapping into a vein of indie rock that is mostly overlooked these days. On some other website the other day I saw a review of Sleepwall that queried why any band would want to sound like Dinosaur Jr. Said website was full of other reviews of bands ripping off other various bands from the past bunch of decades, which kind of answers the question for them I reckon. Polygon aren’t tearing up the rulebook, but they are making good old fashioned, honest, indie rock of the best kind – dudes rocking out and making enjoyable music. One to keep an ear on.
