Labels: Superfluous
Review by: Oli Saunders
This came out during the middle of last year. Apparently it stems all the way back from the nineties when some guys from Enrico ran a label and released some records for the pre-Zillionare band Pogoh. Always nice when a freindship made continues over time and results in something like this.
Enrico play two on the first side. These guys are German and play some kind of emo indie postpunk crossover music, not too far away from the likes of Radio Burroughs and The Solumn League I guess. I really like the instruments, they keep the songs interesting throughout. The two guitars in particular sound really good – quite fast paced and finding lots of interesting riffs, but continuing to mix things up. I have to say, however, that I’m not a massive fan of the vocals. In places they sound pretty decent and I defintiely reckon you’d be into them if you like the namedropped bands above. But I swear at the start of the first song they sound a bit heavy metal like?? Elswhere they improve but it’s not really to my tastes. I would like to conclude that it’s fairly good overall though.
On the other side is one drawn out song by Zillionare, who are from the US. This reminds me a lot of The One AM Radio, the vocals in particular, though it has more of an indie backdrop. It’s a really pleasant sound with melancholic overtones, and the song is clearly about a break up. I can’t help but feel, however, that they drag it out longer than needs be and it ends up a bit melodramatic. Still decent though.
Overall, a few negative points aside, it’s a nice split that you may well be into if you like the German emo indie crossover genre or melancholic folk indie crossover stuff like The One Am Radio.
