Wiccans - Demo Tape - Tape (2009)

Labels: Eat A Book
Review by: Oli Saunders

This is something I wouldn’t normally pick up in all honesty but now I have I am really glad I did. Wiccans contain a member of Teenage Cool Kids and have a sort of hardcore garage sound. The guitars are definitely in garage territory – there are lots of neat riffs that keep things interesting. Then over the top are hoarse shouted vocals, the likes of which I don’t often hear with this kind of style. It generally works fine; they do get a little samey in places for my tastes in all honesty but over the course of this eight song demo tape it’s not a major issue. I would say it’s my main complaint about the music though; I’d love to see a bit of variation in future songs and maybe some backing vocals added to the mix. What the hell do I know though.

‘Repetition’ is a stand out track for me. The lyrics are actually decipherable for this song, as opposed to a lot of the others which seem to be half drunken ramblings about Dungeons And Dragons. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, ‘Coven Of The White Stag’ contains such lyrics and is another standout – awesome guitar hooks here in places. Overall, a nice and simple put together demo that is worth checking out.
