The Smoking Rolo Sideshow - Rocket Silence - CD (2010)

Labels: Them Big Trees Recording Company
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Shit me. I had a look back at what our man Alex Deller had to say about these folks the first time around, and was a touch worried. The tagline: “utter dreck”. Not entirely sure therefore why the Smoking Rolo Sideshow would come back for more. It’s basically a fairly hideous, middle of the road, “album oriented rock” (I think? Is that the one? So called because no fucker is ever going to find a single worth plucking from the record). Stultifyingly bland music that drones on and on and on and on for what I can only imagine is a grimly unpleasant hour. I can only imagine, because I can tell you right fucking now that I am not going to give it a chance to suck away my will to live for that long. The press release has the temerity to bandy around comparisons such as Queens of the Stone Age and Syd Barrett. The band comes from Alnwick in Northumberland, I suggest they go and spend more time in the beautiful countryside and derive some worthwhile inspiration. Shit me.
