Trouble in Mind have put out some corking sevens over the past few months and this is right up there with the best of them. “Bobby Blueheart” is the winning track here as the Hollows crank out an inspired little girl group + power pop effort. The lyrics are amusingly cute (I have no idea as to how ironic the band are being here but serious or not, this is still special), whilst the guitars buzz away with enough power to keep it well clear of cloying territory. There are plenty of “Sha la la la la” backing vocals, and some cracking, bouncy keyboard in the mix too. What a winner of a song! “Bobby, Bobby Blueheart… your records sound just as sad as you”. If you are prone to sticking on that Stolen Hearts 7″ then you should be listening to this song also.
“Walkaway” on the flipside is faster and just as fun, coming on like if Busy Signals went keyboard heavy and poppier, hiding some quite downbeat lyrics under the layers of bounce and some brilliant keyboard riffs. This is also a mighty, mighty pop song which absolutely belts along at times. I remember checking this band out at some point and not being that taken, but these two songs are right up my street and I need to go back and see where I went wrong.
Great seven!
