Errata play some really nice drawn out emo on this demo – five songs in 25 minutes. It seems to me to have lots of aspects of many other bands. It has post rock elements, but generally in a good way – a sort of Funeral Diner type take on the genre but not really. The two guitars are pretty typical Euro emo / screamo in nature – they wind about but remain interesting. Overall I really like the general sound the instruments make. But the vocals are what really stand out to me – sung, spoken, screamed and shouted passionately in Portugese (though in later songs they revert to English), with numerous members joining in. It’s quite distinct, though the screamed parts remind of the Italian band Endless Inertia, both in their language and delivery. Perhaps Portugese and Italian speakers may think me crazy for thinking this!
I really like how much they mix up the vocal styles. I’m not normally a fan of sung vocals but they are performed here ala Yaphet Kotto, with the singer really going for it. For this reason the second track ‘Estética Sentimental’ is my favourite, which utilises sung parts a lot. It doesn’t outstay it’s welcome either – a few other tracks do go on for a bit long or have some parts that are a little average. The final track is the weakest effort I think and doesn’t hit the same heights as the others. But most of the songs have at least a few parts which I really like – the build up at the start of track 3 with spoken parts and then screams is amazing.
Overall, this is a very solid demo from a pretty unknown Portugese emo band that I’m pretty sure a lot of people would enjoy. I think the band may have now broken up but I’m not sure. One of my favourite things is to randomly stumble across bands like this and when it happens it is usually via Collective Zine. Errata are unlikely to blow your world apart but if you are into emo and refuse to use the phrase PAES on Collective then you should check them out.
