Labels: Captured Tracks
Review by: Andy Malcolm
Another seven on Captured Tracks, and the opener here “Gentle One” initially seems fairly standard fare for the label but upon further inspection you’ll find it certainly brings something new to the fore. It’s a taut and over-bearing number, the electro and bass makes it feel very close, muggy would be a good weatherbound analogy. You’ve heard hazy, you’ve heard shimmering, well here’s one that’ll make you want to get the fan on. Lots of plinky beats muddle with aimless female vocals, for an unusual combination of spaced out 60s psychedelic pop and early 80s brood. I think. I’m not exactly the most well versed when it comes to either. Flip it for “Movie Light” however and you are on to an absolute winner. It’s not like the a-side is grim, but this repetitious effort is a stunner. Little inflections of old soul, a persistent drum machine beat, and more of those dithering vocals. It ought not to work, yet it certainly does for me. The guitar and occasional bursts of saxophone really work together well in tandem. This seven inch is a tease, the songs are intriguing but I feel they would breathe far more in the company of 10 others. If you’re prone to investigation, then this is certainly one of the less familiar things that CT have released lately, and you may just want to give this one a few enjoyable spins.
