Here’s another 7″ slice of generally pleasant indie pop that seems to be having a little identity crisis, switching things up from track to track. I am quite the sucker for this kind of shenanigans, and this does initially appear to be more accomplished than the previous work of the band that I came across. “Fall Straight Back” gets down to business with repeated guitar and lazy female vox. It’s the kind of thing Captured Tracks put out when they fancy something poppier instead of gothy. “Able To” beefs matters up somewhat, which makes for a nice change of pace and something more straight up. Simple riffage and it isn’t that far removed from Superchunk if we’re going to be honest about such subjects. Kick it over for three songs, the first is pretty throwaway, then into a kinda garagey girl group thing which is nice, recalling Grass Widow gone a bit 60s. “Electric Blue” closes things up and is the weakest track on here, maybe as the guy is singing and I don’t like his voice. The track is a bit boring too.
This is OK, chameleon indie. Not really sure I’ll be in a hurry to check out what they do next I’m afraid, this just doesn’t hit the sweet spot for me.
