In what must be a record even for Teller, their one long song of sorrow and was recorded in the Spring of 2008. Thank goodness they finally deigned to get it out there. It fills up the entire side at 45rpm, and features both sides of the band. You get the galloping punk rock that falls away into slower moments of contemplation. It’s a blur of muddy guitar, warm bass and crashing drums, with Thomas on vocals, suffering from as bad a sore throat as ever. Sometimes endearingly clumsy, sometimes sorrowful, it reminds of Broccoli at their most emo. Chippendale are from Japan and this sounds like Snuffy Smiles bands from 1998, such as Blew or Lovemen, bands that haven’t troubled my ears in a goodly long time. Also, it sounds a lot like Broccoli’s fast songs, down to the vocals. It’s nice to hear this kind of music but where as Marshall Teller do something fresh with it, Chippendale are almost imitating. That said, the two songs are good, and the intro to “Totoro” sounds like the Pine. I like the speedy melodies and the peculiar vocals are kind of neat.
