Labels: Once A Great Surgeon
Review by: Andy Malcolm
Whilst this band may have a pretty dreadful name, they have managed to commit two tracks of bloody fine indie rock to purple vinyl. I appear to have put the b-side on first, so “At Full Speed” is a short and sweet fuzz rocker, very simple and enjoyable with airy female vocals over crunchy guitar. Would have ditched the wanky bit towards the end where they get the guitar effects out, as it’s a complete waste of the bands time and mine. Fortunately it doesn’t ruin a really solid track. Over on the a-side we have the title track where a dude is taking vocal duties on a slow burning shoegazer effort which meanders around in a hungover haze, drifting from monged out bliss to full on pounding, noisy pop. I just noticed there are 8 people in this orchestra according to the insert, which might be overkill, but I guess people who play in bands like this are probably flakes and so at least if you have 8 people, then when 1 person fails to turn up for a gig because of whatever flakey reason, no-one will notice. This is good. I particularly like that they made a shorter song using a style of music that some less daring bands would be tempted to turn into a 10 minute faux epic because it’s the “done thing”.
