Neverest Songs - Small Voyages - CD (2010)

Labels: Unlabel
Review by: David Giles

Small Voyages is one guy from Margate playing, to my ears, Sufjan Stevens & Beirut worship. I don’t think there’s really any reason to discourage him from keeping at it, but the whole CD left me a good bit wanting. A lot of the songs seemed really repetitive and were just not gloomy enough to make listening a second time seem worth the effort. Also, and I’m more than willing to admit that this is my own inflection, his voice (and particularly the way he prolonged a lot/the majority of the words he sung) started to get to me after a while. All that said, this isn’t notably bad I guess, and will probably appeal to English “˜folk revival’ types (Johnny Flynn fans). Actually, this is probably too downbeat for them”¦ but it’s a country mile better than the droz they listen to. Give it a shot if you think you might like downbeat singer-songwriter stuff like a far less brooding Mark Kozelek or the slow bits of Beirut with an English accent.
