Serena Maneesh - No. 2: Abyss in B Minor - CD (2010)

Labels: 4AD
Review by: David Giles

Pretentious band name, pretentious album title, pretentious song title. I’m in for yet another half hour that threatens to push me over the boundary between high blood pressure and a full-fledged coronary. I wish everyone would just fucking listen to Integrity and stop caring what the girls at their university think.

This gave me a bit of a surprise. After the first track of waste-of-time “˜experimental post-rock’, or whatever the hipsters call it nowadays, this cuts into poppy shoegazey stuff, along the same lines of Gliss (but smarter and better) or other My Bloody Valentine wannabes kicking around. It’s definitely not bad, but not particularly my cup of tea. Especially when there is quite a lot of mediocre-to-alright shoegazey stuff kicking about, I can imagine this fading into obscurity then being discovered ten years down the line and jocked hard on a couple of forums for a few years. Not for me though I’m afraid. If you really want to hear more stuff following the shoegaze in the 21st century archetype get into this.
