Trees - Freed Of This Flesh - CD (2010)

Labels: Crucial Blast
Review by: Alex Deller

Must admit I wasn’t 100% sold on this lot’s previous effort for Crucial Blast, but while “Lights Bane” mightn’t have been perfect it nevertheless showed promise and a penchant for plumbing the kind of chasmic depths that most right-minded folks would choose to shy away from. Two years on and things appear to have stayed fairly static, “Freed Of This Flesh” comprising two mire-dwelling tracks that favour tone, texture and sonic exploration over linear song structure or anything that could be construed as remotely listener-friendly. All well and good you might think, but the debt that this quartet owe to the likes of Khanate and Burning Witch – glacial pace, fractured un-riffs, gargled malevolence et al – has yet to be paid in full, meaning those of us seeking something more than a paler shade of what went before are still left with a hunger that simply will not abate.
