Let's Wrestle - Young Governor - split - 7

Let’s Wrestle are a UK band and they are on Merge, apparently. Crikey. Not bad going. Also, I hope they are named after a Joan of Arc song. That song is cool. This is pretty cool too, and I can kind of see why this band had an album on Merge, as it’s in the same ballpark as mid 90s Superchunk. “Crushing Nerves” is simple and smart indie rock, with fuzzy pop hooks and enough punky bite to make it rough around the edges and intriguing. This is not going to change your life, but it’ll probably enough to convince you whether you want to go buy their LP or not. Young Governor have a song amusingly entitled “Old Hat”, amusing because this sounds like it was recorded years ago. Some sort of power pop / mod thing with Ben Cook’s ace vocals. It’s lo-fi, it’s very simple and repetetive, and it’s all ok in my book. I’m not convinced as to its merit as a song on a single, I think it’d fit nicely in the middle of an LP, but it doesn’t stand out enough on its lonesome.
