Yes! what a truly marvellous title for an album indeed. Theres a high
five claimable here, team Science rides. Another high five for being
named after Justin Fashanu (footballs only openly gay player to date)
a fact I found out after tracking them down on their blog (no myspace-
another five) That’s either three high fives, or a high fifteen,
whichever works I guess. You choose, guys.
Pop punk used to be a sufficiantly reliable genre, you could take say
Crackle records, look at their catalogue close your eyes, swirl around
and poke a finger at random, and whatever you hit would be absolutely
guaranteed to put a good sized smile on your face. Most of it is crap
nowadays. Fashanu aren’t crap, not by a very very long way. Not a clue
what it is about these six tracks, but they’re dead on the money. I
can’t even remember the last time I got this excited about a pop punk
band. I love everything about them. The wry lyrics, the gleeful
jangling songs that are exactly the right kind of rough about the
edges, all of it. Good god I sound delirious.
There’s something hugely likeable about Fashanu, I can’t put my
fingure on it. Whatever it is, it’s the same thing that used to make
me get horribly excited about bands on Snuffy Smile, Cat and Cakey,
the aforementioned Crackle, and so on.. The last song finishes with
the line “this time we’ll do it again”. Yes please!
