Souvaris - Sincabeza - Clown Jazz - LP (2010)

Labels: Gringo
Review by: Alex Deller

Two tasty slivers of instrumental post-rock here, one lot from the East Midlands and the other residing across the channel in Bordeaux. Souvaris kick off, their sound jittery yet warm and full of playful little guitar lines, fuzzy electronic wavebreaks and evasive drum patterns that skitter their way joyfully from pillar to post without ever even suggesting that they might be about to lose their way. French contingent Sincabeza are made of similarly jazzy stuff but are perhaps a tad more hyperactive, their tracks laden with unexpected squelches and off-kilter Battles-y prods in the ribs that keep you on your toes rather than allowing you to kick back and catch up with whatever book you’ve been reading. It’s a dead heat as to who’s the winner here, but if you’re fond of acts like Tortoise, The Sea And Cake or Karate then the one taking home the prize might just be you.
