Boy Friend - s/t - Download (2011)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

“Outer Limits” by Sleep Over was my favourite song of 2010, so when two of the girls involved in that band started something new, I was always going to be intrigued to hear it, especially when one of them does the “vocals”. I put vocals in quotes because it barely qualifies as that. It sounds more like the sound that a rare gas would make (if you had special headphones that were capable of detecting such a sound) as it snakes it’s way through the thin atmosphere of some distant moon of an uninhabited planet. Boy Friend must have recorded this in some other galaxy, and are beaming it back to us from a fogged out future. It’s lost some of the aspects of “Outer Limits” that made me go weak at the knees, but instead has beamed everything up, and intermingled the sound of solar winds generated by a star that is far beyond our heliopause.

There are only four songs on this download, but you can return to them repeatedly without fear of burn out, for the soothing sounds contained within will make everything OK again. I accept that this review has not left you in adequate possession of any knowledge as to what this band sounds like, other than spacey, and a little bit like Sleep Over, but that’s all you need to know. To the launch pad, space cadet, for it is time to leave the friendly confines of Sol in search of a tantalising future. It’s out there. Somewhere. Beyond the Outer Limits. Ignition sequence start.
