Right from the beginning I knew this one was going to be a struggle as it had a plastic, hologramatic seal which prevented me from opening the box and which I was only able to remove with the use of a pair of nail scissors. Why do labels do this ? What possible reason could they have for making it difficult to get to the CD inside the box ? What is the thinking that informs such a decision ? What is the point ? What is the purpose ?
It was only after I had gained entry to the box, recovered the CD, put it into the CD machine and heard the recordings on it, that I finally realised why someone didn’t want anyone to ever hear what was on it.
Let’s just start by saying that of course not all foreign music is terrible, that would be foolish, some of it is brilliant. For example, Sun Ra was one of the finest jazz musicians ever and he was from Saturn and you can’t get much more foreign that that can you ? Saturn is miles away and they probably have lots of really weird foods there that you can’t even get in Waitrose so the idea that all foreigners are rubbish and that their rubbish music is all rubbishy rubbish is just plain daft.
I haven’t been able to work out where exactly in the world the artist responsible for this album is from, although the title is the Finnish word for Seasonal Affective Disorder so maybe that’s a clue, although with collaborators called Enrico Cipollini, Alessandro Bazzochi and Luca Pedeferri I think Finland might be about a thousand miles north from where the attack needs to take place and not even a nuclear bomb has that sort of impact area. Remember, we need to be 100% if we’re going to call in the airstrike.
Onward, ever onward. This record is just a man singing songs, some of which sound like filler on an early Levellers album, about things like love and all that shit. One of the songs is called “Isolated” another is called “The Little Boy who Forgot Santa Klaus” don’t buy it, it’s rubbish.
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
Fire mission, fire mission. Call sign is “almighty.” Coords as punched. DO IT NOW.
