I don’t listen to hardcore as much as some of our other reviewers, but I do like to think I can pick out an intriguing hardcore record that might appeal to losers with a similar taste in music to me. Son Skull dispense a mere 7 tracks of their amped up flailing here, with harsh female vocals and nary a pause for breath. It’s all slightly scuzzy and ensures that the punk rock quotient is kept high. I love the way they bring everything together, high powered energy and simple bombast, everything on the edge of collapse, particularly when you throw in the wild vocals. Then they totally slip in a fucking emo track, ridiculous! A dude takes over on vocals on “Ryan & Crystal” and it sounds so much like Chino Horde, no shit! Probably no-one else who reviews this record will tell you that, but too bad. Great track, killer grooves, would love to hear a whole 7″ of them doing this kind of thing. “I DON’T WANT TO HEAR THAT SHIT ANY MORE!!”
Other than that, this record is full of righteous guitar squeals, feedback, fuzzy riffs, shouting and loudness. I don’t know about you, but that pretty much is exactly what I want from a hardcore punk record. Bands like Shotmaker, Honeywell and Assfactor4 made the best hardcore as far as I am concerned, and Son Skull sit pretty nicely with that crowd. Sweet.
