Labels: The Lows And The Highs
Review by: Oli Saunders
‘Shoegazing, reverb drenched attic duo. Fragile, leftfield dream pop, verging on the ambient’; this is how the flyer for Mars To Stay’s first gig (last night) describes the band. This is far more descriptive than I can manage in a couple of short sentences and saves me writing too much nonsense about how they remind me a little bit of Duster mixed with Codeine, Slowdive and The Foundry Field Recordings. The result in any case is something quite distinctive from those bands.
There are two songs on the tape and they are both very well put together lo-fi recordings. Reverb on both the vocals and guitar (the former really stands out and really distinguishes the band), with soft and simple drumming in the background. The name alludes a little to the genre of space-rock but this is far more dreamy and sad. The lyrics further establish the link, one example being ‘I fall asleep to hide myself from you’.
Overall a really great start, I saw the band play five songs last night and am told there are further tracks in progress. This hopefully implies some more gigs and releases and I very much look forward to both.
