Zu - Remix - 7

Italy’s legendarily thunderous skronkcore machine, who were once so poundingly rhythmic when I saw them live once that they made me throw up, get the remix treatment for two tracks from their amazing “œCarboniferous” album. James Plotkin, operating solo on one side and as his Phantomsmasher combo alter-ego on the flip makes it fun to do the compare and contrast with the originals, but I think I’ll always prefer the latter. The upfront, relentless noise rock gets a murkily dense, swamped noise treatment which works well in its own claustrophobic right however. “œAxion” for example soon gets deconstructed to the point of freeform noise, with its great sax motif making a welcome reappearance in a lower register. This comes beautifully presented as you would expect from this great label too.
