The Catalyst - Swallow Your Teeth - CD (2009)

Labels: perpetual motion machine – Sons Of Vesta
Review by: David Giles

Off the top of my head all I know about this band is that they have been about since I was 13 or 14 and were being namedropped by kids into screamo, Converge and the like. First listen today.

Bands playing this sort of all over the place (experimental?) post-hardcore(?) tend to throw me off kilter. As best I can put my finger on it, this sounds like a bleed-in between mid-era The Locust and maybe Every Time I Die (especially on a couple of tracks). Maybe substitute ETID for Cave In on a few tracks. Not a type of music I’ve ever particularly followed or rated but one I’ve yet to totally dismiss. Honestly, I don’t know why my attention isn’t captured by this. Its definitely interesting to see bands hope from fast and trashy to slow and jazzy and I’m pretty sure I gave a big thumbs up to a band for doing something similar a few reviews back. However, there’s something about this that makes me feel like the songs don’t have a consistent strain or that I’m having to do too much work to keep up. I realise that’ll paint me in a bad light for fans of the band but there isn’t another way to put it. Hardly over my head “” I “˜get it’ but I don’t really feel the need to explore or listen any more than I already have.
I don’t enjoy it but the people into this type of thing will love it. How’s that?
