Lumber Lung - s/t - LP (2011)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

Man, it has been a fair old while but I can honestly say in the past month I have heard 3 really good, new, old school emo 12″ LPs, and none of them are on my fucking record label. Good times! Lumber Lung perhaps steal the day amidst this new batch, coming out of nowhere to release an LP that is firmly in the Ebullition / Mike Kirsch ballpark, a ballpark where all the players have a heart sewn on their sleeve, lose sight of towering fly balls due to tearful eyes, and strike out swinging frantically at every pitch. Kaitlyn takes on much of the vocal duties and is able to mix it up nicely, sometimes pondering and questioning, other times emphatic or desperate, and always open, honest and laid bare in the best emo fashion. Stylewise, you have heard this done but this is hardly like other strands of hardcore, after all the last similar record was by Juvenescent Beat and that is getting on for a while ago now.

Shit, the lyrics are screened onto cloth for fucks sake. What the fuck is this, 1994? Lumber Lung – you are the emoest bastards to come out of the woodwork in the longest time. Going back through the past decade you can trace this through Juvenescent Beat, to Reds, to Life at these Speeds, to Bailer, to Sinaloa, to the Vida Blue, and to Yaphet Kotto. The baton passed from one to another, the emo relay race may only have one participant at a time, but every 18 months or so you can hope that some band will pop up out of nowhere and record something like this. Quality.
