The fallout from the breakup of the misunderstood, ambitious and intensely intense UK emo violencers The Mock Heroic has already produced Leeds hardcore nuts Mob Rules, a total pearl which formed around the grit that is drummer Conor. In the heart of London however, the other three are forming a clutch of great new bands that all have demo tapes out.
First thing that kicks your head in about Warm Ways is how discordant it is. Wayward guitars slam into tempo changes like no tomorrow, and there’s already a healthy variety in song structures. Gaz, ex-Dead Sea Fuckin’ Scrolls vocalist, hasn’t lost his shrieking, imperceptible style, and it suits things down to the ground. Fast thrashings battle moodier moments, locked down by thick bass lines that the guitar sometimes joins in on, so it’s a delightfully noisy mess that remains tight, locked down and even catchy at times. If you need musical touchstones, Born Against might be a good one, as it’s definitely punk but with a hell of a lot more going on upstairs.
Clearly and simply presented, this comes highly recommended.
