This is the good shit. Satellites of Love are doing punk wrong, which is a lot more punk
than doing it right. Confused? Well that’s kinda the point. It’s noisey and spikey but full
of big chords. It’s thrashed out but washed out. Sometimes it sounds like it’s going to go
all light and airy, but then it’s pounding really hard.
The guitars (two of them dueling constantly, no bass guitar) duel little picky delay
drenched sections, creating a wall of jangly noise over the straight and no frills punk
beats. The singer Noel, who you might know from Facel Vega, drops in and out of the mix
with little wimpers and cries, completely dry on top of the psychedelic guitars, causing a
further juxtaposition. One thing I like about this band is that, although they stand up on
their own, the members were in a handful of UK DIY bands that have really stuck with me,
Satellites of Love are 3/4 of Mock Heroic, and 2/3 of Long Live, which is completely
irrelevant here, but it just shows that people in UK DIY Punk are still pushing the
envelope and trying to do something different and inspiring.
Musically, it’s hard to compare, although at times it made me think of if Wipers had snuck
on at a Cramps gig, and blasted out a set using their gear, out of tune, which probably
makes absolutely no sense, so just buy it.
