Like a punch to the jaw from Van Damme’s glass-encrusted boxing mitt, The Rodeo Idiot Engine’s debut full-length is a ferocious mix of finesse, brute force and blood-smeared jagged edges. Clearly in thrall to genre lynchpins Converge the band hurtle through these 28 minutes at breakneck speed, dosing the frenetic tangles and twists with bursts of bludgeoning low-end and pant-shittingly aggrieved bellows that suggest the band are likely as familiar with Knut, Keelhaul and Isis as Bannon, Ballou and chums. While all of this is nothing new in the year of our lord 2011, each and every affront to the senses is committed with admirable savagery and aneurysm-inducing levels of hostility which automatically raises TRIE several notches above most modern-day pretenders. Get involved, I say.
