We the Drowned - When I Can I Will - CD (2011)

Labels: Can’t Drink Flowers Records
Review by: Andy Malcolm

So, this band has two guys from Driveway Speeding, who were on Crackle way back when. If that isn’t enough of a hint towards their sound for you, then probably their record label name isn’t going to assist you either.

When I Can I Will is traditional UK 1990s style melodic punk, harking back to any number of bands that have received positive reviews on this site down the years (most recent example would be Zapiain). And I’m still not bored of the sound, regardless of how often I have heard it. The only thing with such reviews is that I don’t quite know where to start with them any more. You basically get 6 songs that are all in the same post-code, featuring driving guitar and rhythm, and strong vocals over the top (reminding me of Zapiain and Caustic Soda). It has the requisite melancholy feel that all the bands who ply this kind of music do, it’s all present and correct. You may find this to be a negative, but if you enjoy the irregular output of punk from the UK in this style, then We the Drowned will definitely appeal to you like they do to me. Solid debut.
