Labels: Dire
Review by: Andy Malcolm
Dire is probably sick of me reviewing their releases by now. “Aww shit, why is that emo guy reviewing our stuff again? He doesn’t have a clue about old punk rock, what an uncool dude”. Too bad. Dire puts out a lot of good records and given that all their stuff gets sent to me, and not to Alex Deller, I get to write about it. Ha! I bet they track Alex down and send him the stuff next time, to ensure they get a smart review written by someone literate and with extensive taste in music.
Anyway, the Love Triangle here are playing garagey punk, and fortunately I have heard quite a few releases on In the Red so am a bit more qualified to review this than, say, something by the Sceptres. “Boomerang Girl” is the a-side here, and it’s actually a bit of lumpy thing. The Love Triangle do not appear to be half as melodic as they were the last time around, this track is stodgy, mid-paced, blown out, garage muddle. The vocals are buried underneath the guitar which is fine by me in general, but the vocals mostly consist of one guy going “BOOMER BOOMER BOOMER” and the other guy going “RANG RANG RANG”. Hmm. It’s pretty buzzing, but the lo-ness of the fidelity is costing it in my book. “Quick Joey Small” ironically sounds like my record player is at the wrong speed for much of it. Turns out it’s a cover anyway. I am not sure what’s happened to this band, their previous 7″ was a lot of fun, but these two tracks just don’t cut the mustard for me. I enjoyed the poppiness they had going, but it’s like they pressed up this record and forgot to mix the pop bit in this time. Maybe they will release it separately on a super poppy single later this year.
Well that’s torn it, not only do I have know idea what I am writing about, but I also think this is a pretty mediocre single. Dire is frantically hunting down Alex on Twitter right now to get hold of his address to avoid future mishaps, no doubt…
