The Unit Breed - Always Distance the Lonely - LP (2011)

Labels: Idiomism
Review by: Oli Saunders

Sending LPs on vinyl to be reviewed on CZ is quite a rarity these days so kudos to the band/label for sending this in. And my it’s quite a package – splattered vinyl, download code, plus a large full coloured booklet containing abstract paintings and words from one of the band members. Years in the making, I like how a music album can become an entire art journey for a band.

Onto the music, The Unit Breed play strange indie rock that borders on the psychedlic. They are like a version of The Moody Blues or Steve Hackett brought into the 21st century. There’s probably a niche fanbase for it, I’m just not sure whether they are the sort of people who read Collective. I read a review which complained about it being sluggish and murky but I personally like this. It’s kind of brooding and menacing and, whilst it does dawdle along a hell of a lot, it doesn’t get boring. We all need to listen to music like this once in a while.
