Labels: New Heavy Sounds
Review by: MH
This one set alarm bells ringing from the off with the band name – Cut Yourself In Half. Still, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I put the CD on. Could they be a comedy emo band? Or some other overly theatrical heavy metal monster? The latter is much closer to reality. There are two songs here and it’s definitely metally rock. I’ve seen them described as doom elsewhere but I won’t pretend to know anything about that genre. There are some hefty riffs here and I can hear a bit of a Queens Of The Stone Age influence in amongst it all but it’s a lot more classic heavy rock and misses the catchier hooks. It’s got quite an old school rock sound on both tracks and driving rhythms led by the riffing. I’m not 100% convinced whether they they are being serious or not though and I don’t like the vocals or the lyrics at all. The vocals are hammy at times and lyrics like “You howl like a wolf/You cry like a crow” don’t really appeal. It’s all a bit too theatrical for me with some of the backing vocals on “Say Goodbye To The World” seemingly doing some haunted house-type “whoo-whoo” sounds. The echoey effect on the vocals on “Psycho Human Being Disaster” really grate on me too. This CD sounds like what could possibly soundtrack a lesser, updated version of This Is Spinal Tap. If any of that sounds appealing then you might like this but I’m afraid I’m not into this at all.
