Acoustic folk here from Meg Baird who is also in the band Espers. This is her second solo album following her debut album of cover versions. For this one, she has branched out and written most of the songs herself. She has a quite beautiful voice – it’s quite haunting and old-worldly. She has a fairly intricate, finger-picked style when playing guitar and the instrumentation is quite sparse for the most part. A slide guitar and harp make appearances along the way courtesy of some guest musicians. As a result, it’s quite traditional-sounding. This album sounds to me like it could have been recorded at any time since the 1970s and I’d have been hard-pressed to tell you when if I didn’t already know. There is a melancholy, sad feel to many of the songs but it’s a nice listen. A couple of cover versions crop up on here too including a House Of Love song which bears little resemblance to the original but her version fits well with the other songs here. Whilst I don’t pretend to be any kind of connoisseur of this type of music, I can appreciate it for the very soothing and gentle listen that it is “” this album will probably get a few late night listens in my house.
