Tilehurst Children's Arkestra - Kopfsalatrock - 10

I was kind of a bit in love with this record before I even played it. Firstly, it’s a 10″ record, surely the king of physical formats and it has a screenprinted head of lettuce on the cover (hence the title). Anyway, here we have eight tracks of slightly mathy, methodical instrumental rock. Although some of the tracks here are noodly and somewhat sparse, the guys are certainly not afraid to headbang, as in ‘Stabby’ and ‘(Four) Hours in the Lettuce Factory’ which provide a welcome change of pace. There is a jazzy core running through this thing but it never dominates proceedings, and there is enough variety here to keep the listener interested; not always the case with this kind of style. The tracks are almost all around the 2-3 minute mark which may help with this, but the lengthier track ‘The Horse That Never Loses’ is probably my favourite, atmospheric and driving and the right side of repetitive in that lovely neo-krautrock style. A fairly tasty record worth consuming, or at least trying a free sample of on Bandcamp, although it may not count as one of your ‘five a day’.
