Great Apes are a new band from San Francisco doing their gruff, pop punk thing with 3 solid tracks on this debut 7 inch. They are ex- various other bands including Hanalei, Burial Year and Landlords. It’s fairly straightforward, poppy punk and they do a good job. There are quite gruff vocals and catchy melodies throughout as is typical of this kind of music. I quite like the strain on the vocals. There are some interesting lyrics on “It’s A Trans’ World” about transgender folk. It is also the standout track here – it really belts along and has a big chorus. They slow things down a little (only a little, mind!) and turn up the pop on the last track, “Detonator”, which adds some variation and highlights their knack at catchy melodies. I have friends who will lap this band up. There are a million and one bands playing this type of music but this is a solid debut and a nice introduction to a new band.
