Best Practices - the EP LP - 12

Labels: Tiny Engines
Review by: MH

During a few spare moments at work I thought I’d take another look at the digital stuff that was sent in, as I had reached writer’s block on some of the other stuff in my list. Best Practices are fronted by Jeff Byers, ex-Light The Fuse And Run and Wow, Owls! and feature members of other bands like Weak Teeth and Jesuscentric. I really liked Byers’ previous bands and was hopeful I’d find something I liked here. I wasn’t disappointed. This hurtles out of the blocks with “DeerHunter” and when the drums change the pace of the song I am instantly hooked. They play garagey punk rock that is both raucous and raging. There are nine tracks here – the majority of which hover around the 60-second mark. They pile through the lot of them in about 12 minutes flat. There is so much energy in those 12 minutes that it feels like it’s about to careen out of control at any second. The power of the guitars and hooks is bang on, as are the vocals. I’ve been listening to this on repeat – easily one of my favourite releases of 2012 so far.
