I’ve seen this lot a couple of times supporting Jeffrey Lewis when he has been in town, and they’ve always been quite good in a look like a drama student band type way. They have a dancer who wears a blue suit type thing with gloves all over it. MBA play a slightly skewed, weird brand of pop music that clings to conventional songwriting structures by a thread and incoporates lots of brass, oddball lyrics and electronic effects.
And it’s not too bad either. The vocalist, Grandmaster Gareth (nice name) pretty much defines the band; his deep vocals and clever yet unusual lyrics often guide and direct the songs. The album is probably a bit too long really, after 15 tracks the quirkyness does get a little too much but there’s no denying there are some indie pop gems within. I’ll probably dig this one out in the summer and love it.
