Lindsay Minton - Past is Prelude - Tape (2012)

Labels: Count Your Lucky Stars – sncl

This has been kicking around on a CDR for a while and is now out on tape. It was recorded originally in 2008. This is a solo effort from Lindsay Minton with some help along the way from others including Mercy, who was in Tin Kitchen, and is in Football, etc. alongside Lindsay. This kind of bridged the gap between the end of Tin Kitchen and the start of Football, etc. Those familiar with either of those bands will recognise some of the sounds on offer here – the vocals linger a little like on many of her bands’ songs. There is some lovely guitar on the instrumental track that opens this “” it bobs along nicely. Apparently most of these songs started as instrumentals and then vocals were added later to the majority of them. This one really stands up on his own as an instrumental. Lindsay’s familiar vocals appear for the first time on the jangly “Joe’s Old Hat” which is about a late old friend. Those jangly guitars are present throughout with rather lovely, sweet vocals over the top. The start of “œSpills” brings some louder guitar that calls to mind Rainer Maria at their peak. The standout track for me here is towards the end – the gentle and rather gorgeous “œHeart”. The song is quiet understated and the guitar sounds are lovely. She leaves us with “œInterlude” which is a rather splendid keys-led instrumental track. “œPast Is Prelude” has that lovely Autumnal feel to it.  There is a familiar guitar sound here but it’s not as loud as Football, etc. If you liked either related band and the aforementioned Rainer Maria you really won’t be disappointed. Really great stuff.
