In an ideal world I would have got my shit together and reviewed this one before Andy reviewed the LP so it would have looked like we were ON THE BALL and KNEW WHAT WE WERE DOING. Instead, no, I sat on it and didn’t bother and now look at us. Anyway, Criminal Code, as Andy rightly said, are fucking great. Yes, yes, they have a Wipers thing going on, but it’s all drenched in this ratty 80s production sound (think: a cut-rate Joy Division, Crisis or any number of mid-to-late 80s Dischord releases) that suits the music just perfectly and gives them an individual edge. ‘Red Lights’ has snaky guitar lines, some awesome Adolescents/Circle Jerks melodies and a great sense of climactic desperation while the two on the flip follow suit and don’t much disappoint either, rounding out a great lil 7″ and a fitting companion piece to this year’s similarly-great LP.
