Cassus - I Don't Want To Know Why The Caged Bird Sings - Split - Tape (2012)

Labels: Interskramz

Holy shit, a split of screamo from two new UK bands. I can hardly pass this up, can I. Cassus (not to be confused with Casus from Bristol) are a Norwich based screamo band who have listened to a lot of Orchid. Will Killingsworth even allegedly mixed the split which is pretty mindblowing. They don’t do anything original, with hints of Orchid and Kodan Armada in the mix, but it’s solid stuff.

I Don’t Want To Know Why The Caged Bird Sings have a sound that is a little bit more modern. One of their song titles is even more ridulous than their name, believe it or not. At least they didn’t name themselves after a flower. The vocals are cool, the guitar and drums just sound a bit flat and, well, dull. It needs a bit of work, but you can hear them putting their hearts into it at least. They actually hail from Saltford, a town ten minutes away from where I grew up. If I was their age and still lived there I’d be trying to get in on the action, for sure.

The main problem of course… people who grew up on Orchid and the like (including me) are never gonna get into this that much when they’ve already seen it all by now. I know this, you know this, Will Killingsworth certainly knows this. And kids these days are getting into a whole host of terrible screamo bands, who have made even me become cynical. But a few people will be into this and, for me, screamo bands are still one hell of an experience live, so I’ll be keeping an eye out. You should too if ever a screamo band has made your heart flutter.
