Within seconds of the first song starting I am in no doubt that this is La Boite Diabolique – they are really developing their own unique sound and it doesn’t sound like anything else I can pinpoint right now. This EP is typically short with a sound similar to their previous 7inch and demo – jangly, ringing guitars with calm, dreamy harmonies drifting alongside fast-paced and nervy rhythms. The bass and riffs really drive things along in opener “Use Your Space”. They get their groove on in these three tracks. “The Wooden” combines the calmer vocals with more yelled backing vocals from the drummer, and “The Medium Becomes The Method” brings the best harmonies – perhaps my favourite track on this release. Then, suddenly it’s all over, they are gone and I’m left wanting more. 3 songs in less than 4 minutes total. Another fine effort from La Boite Diabolique. I wonder if there will be an album at some point – would probably need to have at least 30 songs on it.
