Peachfuzz - We Are Solid State - CD (2012)

Labels: Bombed Out Records
Review by: MH

This is the latest offering from alt-rockers Peachfuzz. Big songs with woah-woahs and strong, distinctive vocals that remind me of something like Social Distortion but still sounding English. The Hold Steady would be in the same ball park although the vocals are definitely more in the 90s alt-rock area. They are not afraid of the odd guitar solo or some rocky riffing either. I must admit that I am not really a fan of alt rock and sometimes this goes a bit too far into rock territory for me – “Blood On The Moon” is a particular culprit with the soloing and rock lyrics. However, some of the songwriting and melodies on show here are undeniably very strong and a couple of the sadder tunes on here are really good – “If It Makes It Easier” is a corker and “Break Me Again” is another strong track. I also like the power pop tunes on here like the opener “Down To Me” and “Just Give Me Something”. That opener “Down To Me” is a humdinger if ever I’ve heard one – brilliantly anthemic. By the way, the last two tracks combined are almost 15 minutes long. “For Your Love” breaks the six minute barrier and is as good a song as any I have heard of this type of music. At 8 minutes and 27 seconds long, the slower closing track “Oh, Cordelia!” wins the accolade for being the longest track to appear on a Bombed Out release.

There are some very good songs on here and it certainly gets my approval overall having grown on me a great deal since the initial listens. My review has pretty much come full circle to how it originally started out. Definitely check this out if any of the aforementioned bands or the likes of Soul Asylum are your thing. And anyway, definitely give that first song a go!
