4 songs of rugged melodic punk here from Leicester’s Cursing Fiction, blending some Leatherface style grit with the chunky stylings of American bands like Hot Water Music. The music is roughly hewn and is clearly a demo but they are certainly on the right track, and the pounding “Punk Rock in C#, Watch Me for the Changes” is probably the pick of the bunch for me, hitting the ground running and not easing off for a moment. As tends to the be the case for this style of music, I find that bands from this sceptered isle tend to produce much more interesting stuff than their American cousins, perhaps as things are a bit more downbeat and don’t appear to be singing about high fiving your bro’s on the porch steps whilst drinking PBR. Then again, the lyrics are not always particularly clear so maybe that’s exactly what they’re gruffing on about after all.
I’m always happy for when there are a few UK bands kicking about in this style and Cursing Fiction are going about things in a way that appeals to me. One to keep an ear on if you appreciate this sort of thing.
